Safety architecture for an SDV central compute platform

Client
Global automaker
Phase
Production development
Standards
ISO 26262 Parts 4 and 6

A new central compute platform runs safety-relevant functions and infotainment on one high-performance processor, separated by a type-1 hypervisor, with a safety microcontroller supervising it. The silicon vendors' safety manuals had to become requirements the platform teams could build and verify.

  • Platform software safety requirements and architecture, handed to the implementation teams
  • Hardware monitor requirements derived from the silicon vendors' safety manuals
  • Health supervision and safe-state reactions between the main processor and the safety microcontroller
  • Safety-relevant camera and display paths
  • Software FMEA of the supervision and reaction chain
Commercial vehicles

By-wire braking and steering

Client
Commercial vehicle systems supplier
Phase
Concept to A-sample
Standards
ISO 26262 Parts 2 to 6

A supplier developing brake-by-wire and steer-by-wire systems for heavy vehicles needed concept baselines it could take through gate reviews, then an electronic system design ready for A-sample, delivered as fixed-price work packages alongside its own engineering and a partner engineering firm.

  • Concept architecture: context, functional, logical and physical views, with trade studies on topology and redundancy
  • Functional safety management plans, item definitions, HARAs, safety goals and functional safety concepts
  • Review and approval support for technical safety concepts, with TSR and safety-mechanism allocation
  • Electronic system design, platform-independent BSW architecture and requirements, and the hardware-software interface
  • Design work authored in SST, with element-level versions and traceability across system, BSW and HSI

Systems engineering workflow for a major automaker

Client
Major automaker
Phase
Engineering process
Tools
SysML, DOORS Next, MathWorks

The automaker's systems engineering and design workflow had grown around its tools instead of its engineers. We redesigned it.

  • Design boundaries for software systems, so each team knows what it owns
  • Gold-standard requirement and test artifacts as the reference for every team
  • Tool automation for continuous integration across SysML, DOORS Next and MathWorks tooling
Passenger vehicles · ADAS

Adaptive high-beam assist

Phase
Platform and feature development
Standards
ISO 26262

Design leadership for the software platform behind an adaptive lighting feature, and its functional safety architecture.

  • Software platform to support ADAS lighting features
  • Functional safety architecture for adaptive lighting, including interfaces to object detection and tracking
Powertrain

Cold-start thermal unit for aftertreatment, turnkey

Phase
Requirements to verification
Standards
ASPICE, ISO 26262, OBD

Turnkey development of a major aftertreatment subsystem, from requirements definition through implementation and verification.

  • Requirements definition, implementation and verification
  • A development process satisfying ASPICE, functional safety and OBD at once
  • Design, build and test toolchain setup
Specialty vehicles

OBD and IUMPR certification readiness

Client
Specialty heavy-duty vehicle maker
Phase
Certification planning
Regulation
Heavy-duty OBD, IUMPR

A plug-in hybrid heavy-duty vehicle program needed its engineering and program teams aligned on what OBD certification would demand. We ran the workshop.

  • Certification requirements and their allocation to the hybrid powertrain
  • IUMPR tracking and demonstration planning
  • A path from current state to a certification package
Agriculture

Hazard analysis for a tire inflation system

Phase
Concept gate
Standards
Functional safety, HARA

Independent review of the hazard analysis and risk assessment for a tractor tire inflation system ahead of its concept gate.

  • HARA review: hazards, operating situations and rating rationale
  • Safety goals and concept-gate recommendations
Experience our engineers bring

Before Unatech, and alongside it

Our engineers' careers cover more than two decades of embedded controls and safety-critical software, at automakers, engine makers, suppliers and engineering firms. That experience comes with them to every engagement.

Electrified drivetrains

EV transmission and inverter safety

Safety architectures and safety cases for electric transmission controllers and traction inverters, including ASIL decomposition that took 65% of one program's software out of ASIL scope.

Batteries

Battery management safety

Formal safety management for a large battery management application: tailored process, SEooC HARA and a safety case built from the ground up.

Audio and security

Amplifier software and DRM

AUTOSAR architecture for an audio amplifier, and a cybersecurity and DRM concept taken through OEM certification and acceptance.

Engines and aftertreatment

Heavy-duty OBD certification

Novel OBD monitors and certification for US 2007 to 2013 and Euro 5 and 6 engine platforms, Tier 4 and EMD programs, and aftermarket natural-gas conversions. Two patents in OBD diagnostics.

AUTOSAR

Basic software from the specification

AUTOSAR-compliant basic software and drivers built from the 3.1 specification before commercial configuration tools were available.

Rail, aerospace, electronics

Beyond the car

Locomotive software architecture and design FMEA, gas turbine combustor modelling for industrial engines, and embedded Linux and VxWorks platforms for consumer and telecom hardware.
